SSE and Hitotsubashi Joint Symposium on Innovation Ecosystem
A key to successful innovation: lessons from Swedish and Japanese start-up practices.

In today’s turbulent business environment, where geographical and industrial boundaries are disappearing along with the distinction between incumbent and startup companies, achieving superior innovation capabilities has never been so important. Yet, most innovation initiatives fail to achieve their performance targets due to complexity and uncertainty around customer needs, technological options, business model configurations or scalability issues. While similar management principles and techniques, e.g., from design thinking, lean and agile approaches, are being adopted globally, countries are eager to maintain their national identity and cultural heritage, while adapting their social and regulatory frameworks in an evolutionary, non-disruptive, fashion. This symposium will provide a unique opportunity for practitioners to gain insights about the Swedish and Japanese innovation ecosystems. Participants will also get inspiration from managers of unicorns and other successful startups in the digital business about key factors that drive innovation success.

Customer-centric innovation, the Swedish way

“Customer centricity has taken the technology and business worlds by storm. Understanding the behaviors that drive consumers’ expectations has become a critical part of any innovation process.

From design thinking to hypothesis-driven development, lean to agile methodologies, we are made to believe that repeatable processes will drive change — and that creative problem solving can be industrialized — all the while being measurable and data-driven. But is that proven? And can it work for any working environment? Building on her experience managing innovation and creative teams in companies ranging from management consultant firms to advertising agencies, startups or banking incubators, both in Sweden and in Japan, Zélia will share insights around customer centric methodologies and their applications in data-driven organizations. She will then highlight the Virtusize model, and its ambitions for a future based on what consumers actually do. Not what they say they do.

In this talk, she will cover:

  • what are the basics of customer centric design frameworks,
  • how customer centricity increases performance in measurable ways,
  • the innovation challenges that stem from those tools,
  • what is needed to foster creative thinking in existing teams,
  • what a successful team setup looks like in company like Virtusize”
